Crews quickly doused a fire at Seaspan’s North Vancouver shipyard Thursday afternoon.
According to District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, the contents of an industrial dump bin alongside one of the fisheries sciences vessels under construction went up just before 1 p.m.
The fire sent up a large plume of dark smoke and the shipyard’s alarm could be heard from several blocks away but the fire itself was quite minor, said assistant chief David Dales.
Seaspan’s own emergency response team knocked the flames down using fire extinguishers. District fire crews arrived a short time later to offer back-up and hoses.
“It’s heavy industry. So it’s probably something that was hot in with combustible materials. It was just one of those little freak accidents. There was no hazardous material or anything like that,” Dales said.
