Canada's figure skating royalty, including several skaters with North Shore ties, will be honoured this weekend as the Canadian Figure Skating Championships celebrates its 100th anniversary.

All former Canadian figure skating champions and Skate Canada Hall of Fame members have been invited to the event, running Jan. 10-12 at Ottawa's Canadian Tire Centre. The list includes North Shore residents Karen Magnussen, ladies champion in 1968 and 1970-73; Louise and Barry Soper, ice dance champions 1971-74; Jay Humphrey, men's champion 1968-69; and Betty and John McKilligan, pairs champions 1967-68.

All are expected to attend the event as honoured VIP guests except for Magnussen who is too ill to travel following injuries resulting from an ammonia leak at the North Shore Winter Club.

The championships will be shown live on TSN today (Friday) at noon and 4:30 p.m. Pacific time and Saturday at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. The honoured alumni will be featured during a gala on Sunday that will be broadcast on tape delay on CTV at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25.
