WORK to install faregates at the Lonsdale Quay SeaBus terminal began Tuesday, part of a retrofit going on across the TransLink system.
Crews will start with installing wires and platforms for the faregates to be installed at the entrance to the tunnel leading to the SeaBus, according to Drew Snider, TransLink spokesman.
"What people are going to see is a lot of boardings going up, boards that block off the area where the construction work is happening," said Snider. "It means around the entrances they'll have to walk around them, though the entrances will still be accessible and there will be lots of signs out there."
Skytrain stations and the West Coast Express stations are being retrofitted at the same time, with construction expected to last through winter. The faregates, along with a new electronic fare card called the Compass card, are expected to be operational in early 2013.
