A man who fell to his death near the Capilano Suspension Bridge on the weekend was apparently reaching for a dropped bankcard just before he lost his footing, according to police.

The 30-year-old victim, a tourist from St. Catharines, Ont., was preparing to take a photo near an outcrop at the east end of the bridge Saturday evening when what appears to be an ATM or credit card slipped from his pocket and landed on the other side of a safety barrier, according to investigators who have reviewed security footage of the incident.

"The next thing you know, he's climbing over a railing," said Cpl. Richard De Jong, a spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP, describing the footage.

"As he's standing there, it looks like he's almost going to lean forward, and people are saying: 'No, no, no, this isn't a good idea.' Then he slips away from the rocks."

The man plummeted 60 metres to the floor of the canyon, according to police.

Investigators have since identified the victim, but are not releasing the name at the request of his family.

They say he was on vacation in the Lower Mainland with his extended family when the accident occurred.

The RCMP investigation is now closed, said De Jong.

"The coroners service will look into it, and see if there are any recommendations that need to be made, but at this point there doesn't appear to be any issue as far as safety (is) concerned, and definitely no criminal activity," he said.

"It's just a tragic, tragic accident."
