Businesses and residents in one of the North Shore's busiest urban areas have been attempting to go about their afternoon without the assistance of the electrical grid.

On Monday, power for around 2,800 BC Hydro customers went out at around 12:10 p.m., according to the utility provider.

The cause was a downed wire in the alley between Mahon and Chesterfield avenues and 14th and 13th streets West.

"We don't have any information on how it was brought down," a BC Hydro spokesperson said.

"We already had a crew arrive on scene to ensure the area is safe. A downed line is considered an emergency and our crews will work with emergency responders to ensure the area is safe," the spokesperson said.

BC Hydro said staff are waiting for a specialized crew to arrive to repair the line. That crew should arrive before 3:45 p.m., with power restored around 7 p.m., the spokesperson said.

"We truly appreciate everyone’s patience as our crews safely restore power to customers," he said.
