Downed tree and power line result in Cypress detour

Cypress Bowl Road in West Vancouver reopened Monday evening

BC Hydro crews were called out Monday morning (Dec. 6) after a snow-covered tree fell across a power line on Cypress Bowl Road in West Vancouver.

The incident happened just before 6 a.m., just before the West Vancouver public works yard, as the season's first snowfall blanketed the North Shore.

The downed tree halted traffic on the road heading up to Cypress Mountain Resort Monday morning, forcing skiers to take an alternate route through the British Properties. The ski hill advised drivers to take the alternate route up Chippendale Road, which connects to Cypress Bowl Road above the downed power line.

The downed tree and power line also knocked out power to the District of West Vancouver's municipal works yard. Essential work continued with backup generator power, said district spokesperson Donna Powers.

Power was restored and the road was reopened at about 6 p.m., according to BC Hydro.

Elsewhere in West Vancouver, police reported only one minor accident, after a flatbed truck with a tractor trailer slid off Highway 99 just north of Horseshoe Bay, requiring a tow.

In North Vancouver, the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge was closed Monday morning due to slippery conditions.

Environment Canada's automated weather station in West Vancouver recorded two centimetres of snow on the ground Monday, although other parts of the North Shore registered more.

Schools in both North Vancouver and West Vancouver remained open Monday.
