Dorm-room living

Make the most of space and storage

Lowe's home improvement company - which operates 31 stores in Canada including one in New Westminster - offers these tips for making the most of dorm life.

- If your bed is low to the floor, prop it up with milk crates and use under bed storage to stow away towels and toiletries, textbooks, paperwork and other school supplies.

- Keep your busy schedule organized and let your creativity shine by using dry erase paint to create a white board on any surface, or chalkboard paint to create an actual writable, erasable chalkboard finish

- Store your favourite snacks in a mini-fridge so you're prepared for friends visiting unexpectedly.

- Add a microwave and/or toaster oven to make quick meals any time of the day (verify first with your dorm advisor to see if small appliances are permitted).

- Use a single serve coffee maker, such as Keurig or a Tassimo to make coffee easily accessible for late night study sessions.

- Bring more colour to your chores with coordinated brooms, mops, and trash cans.

- Make your room the coolest spot in the hall with multicoloured lamps, paper lanterns, or a disco ball.

- When closet space is at its premium, maximize it with a closet organizer.

- Add colour and style into your living space with rugs, curtains and throw pillows with fun designs and textures (consider noise-and light-reducing window panels).

- Peel-and-stick wall coverings and expressions are a great way to add your personalized touch, without leaving a permanent mark.
