Two pooches perched on a perilous ledge in West Vancouver’s Lighthouse Park are back with their owner thanks to firefighters who hauled the dogs to safety.

Firefighters were called out to the park around noon on Thursday after receiving a report of dogs trapped on a cliff from a distraught owner.

A woman was walking her dogs in the park off the leash when the two canine companions bolted, eventually ending up on a cliff ledge they were unable to escape from.

Crews from West Vancouver Fire and Rescue arrived on scene and lowered a firefighter on a rope to the ledge. One by one, the dogs were strapped into a special dog harness and hauled off the ledge, said Martin Leduc, assistant chief of operations.

The two dogs, Xena and Mercury, were soon back with their relieved owner.

Leduc said the special dog harness comes in handy for such rescues, as does another essential piece of equipment that firefighters carry in their packs: dog treats.
