Display explores children's rights

A North Vancouver community organization asked children about their rights, and got back some surprising answers. "They were amazing at not going for needing televisions or holiday," said Fran Jones, director of North Shore Community Resources.

A North Vancouver community organization asked children about their rights, and got back some surprising answers.

"They were amazing at not going for needing televisions or holiday," said Fran Jones, director of North Shore Community Resources. "They really did hit the very important ones, like the night to be myself, the right to dream."

The exercise was part of a months-long project led by NSCR to get the community thinking about the rights of the child: the basic things all children need to live a happy and healthy life. The project is based on rights that are listed in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The results of the project will be on display at Capilano Mall on Saturday, May 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at an event sponsored by North Shore Community Resources. The celebration will feature musical performances, activities for children and exhibits.

Ralph Sultan, MLA for West Vancouver-Capilano, and Joan McIntyre, MLA for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky, will be on hand to award the winners of the rights of the child bookmark contest. The bookmarks feature children's art along with their versions of the rights of the child, and will be distributed in libraries and community centres.
