Dry and windy conditions, a lack of water, steep terrain and overhead power lines made for a very risky brush fire on the side of Hollyburn Mountain on Tuesday.
Smoke could be seen billowing from underneath high-tension wires on a piece of private land owned by British Pacific Properties around 2:45 p.m.
West Vancouver Fire and Rescue members reached the area via Eagle Lake Road and found a 46-square-metre area burning.
“They did a great job. We adopted the (Ministry of Forests)’s policy of hitting it fast, hitting it hard. They knocked the fire down,” said assistant chief Jeff Bush.
By the time provincial wildfire crews showed up, the blaze had been tamped down, Bush said.
Firefighters stayed on scene to watch for flare-ups until nightfall.
Bush said investigators don’t know what sparked the fire but they were lucky it happened in the middle of the day.
