North Shore Rescue never fails to remind us about the importance of proper footwear in the backcountry. Camden Hussey is now taking that to its logical conclusion: merchandise.

The St. Thomas Aquinas Grade 10 student will be selling North Shore Rescue-branded socks in support of the all-volunteer team this weekend.

The 15-year-old harnessed his entrepreneurial spirit for a school project recently and approached team leader Mike Danks, who gave him the team’s blessing.

“He was really positive. He was excited,” Hussey said.

Hussey sourced out a manufacturer and monogrammed 300 pairs with the North Shore Rescue name, which he now is planning to sell, first-come, first-serve at Grouse Mountain on Saturday.
“It’s always nice to donate and everything, but this way - when you donate - you get something out of it: a pair of socks. I thought that was maybe a little bit more desirable for people,” he said. “I just think it’s something people will always take. They’re not too expensive and they’re something you can always use.”

Hussey said he has long admired the team of local heroes, but it’s personal as well. They once saved someone close to him.

Hussey will be posted up at the base of Grouse Mountain starting at about 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, hoping to catch people before they head into the mountains, where rescue volunteers spend so much of their time.

The socks, which are a polyester-nylon-Spandex blend, sell for $15 per pair with 100 per cent of the profits going to North Shore Rescue for the organization to sock away.

Hussey said he isn’t too worried about whether they’ll sell.

“I think everyone wants to support North Shore Rescue as well,” he said.

If they do sell out quickly, Hussey said he’ll probably put in another order for more.

Sock it to ’em, Camden.
