Crews targeting a new Upper Squamish Valley fire hotspot

Having started in April 15, the blaze still hasn’t been called out almost a month later

The Upper Squamish Valley fire is like a bad odour on an ancient pair of socks — it just won’t go away.

The BC Wildfire Service is still not calling the Magee Road fire out, as the latest scan this week showed a hotspot still present in the area.

On May 8, information officer Marg Drysdale said that a crew is back in the area to mop up those grounds. They’ll be on the lookout for underground burning, which they fight by digging up dirt and dousing it with water.

She said it’s unclear when it’ll be called out, as crews may wait the weekend and see if the hotter weather makes things worse. It’s still classified as an under-control fire.

Having started on April 15, the Magee Road fire is getting close to a month old.

During its peak, the Upper Valley Squamish blaze took out three houses and various structures in the area, displacing dozens of residents.

The area has been opened back up, but authorities say that burned trees in the area pose a fall hazard, and anyone venturing there should be careful.
