The Capilano Blues have hired Steve Millar as their head coach for the men’s soccer team. Millar has an extensive soccer resume, providing him with a wealth of knowledge that he brings to the team.

Gaining distinction as a player early in life, he helped North Delta Secondary win the B.C. high school provincial soccer title in 1988. Following a single season at Simon Fraser University, he went on to play professionally for six years. In a prolific 91-game professional career, Millar represented the Winnipeg Fury, the Edmonton Brick Men and the Vancouver 86ers.

Although Millar never played for Capilano University, he has spent more time on their field than most.

“I’ve grown up around Cap U, I used to train there with the national team and with the 86ers,” Millar said.

After his career as a professional soccer player, Millar became a firefighter with the City of North Vancouver. He said that his father was one of his inspirations to join the force.

“He’s a retired captain of the Vancouver Fire Department, my brother-in-law is also with the Vancouver firemen, so it’s been in the family.”

In recent years, Millar has been coaching several teams with Vancouver/Richmond-based Fusion FC and has had great success with their under-21 team specifically. Last year Millar led his team to victory, winning the league cup and the provincial cup, and earning a place in the league cup again this year.

With more than 25 years of coaching experience, Millar is excited to start training with the Blues in preparation for their 2023 PACWEST season.

“I’m looking forward to coming back and hopefully building the program to what I’ve known it to be,” said Millar. “I know how successful Capilano has been, and that’s what excites me the most is hopefully bringing that culture back and winning environment back.”
