North Shore Rescue responded to an unusual call Thursday when a worker on a hydro project near Mission apparently broke his spine driving over a bumpy stretchy of road.

The 33-year-old victim, a member of a construction crew working near Stave Lake, was at the wheel of a dump truck at about 3 p.m. when he drove over a patch of washboard ridging on a gravel road, according to the volunteer rescue service.

The truck shook so violently that it fractured the mans neck and spine, they said. Workmates helped the man out of the cab, but were unable to get him to a medical centre because of the delicacy of his injuries and the remoteness of the area.

Emergency services contacted North Shore Rescue, who flew to the scene and sedated the man before loading him into a helicopter for transport to hospital.

No word has been released on his condition.
