Bank donates $250K to LGH's Hope Centre

TD Canada Trust has pledged $250,000 towards the building of a new mental health centre at Lions Gate Hospital.

TD Canada Trust has pledged $250,000 towards the building of a new mental health centre at Lions Gate Hospital.

The donation is the second major private gift to the $62-million facility, coming after a $10-million donation from West Vancouver philanthropists the Ho family.

The Greta and Robert H.N. Ho Psychiatric and Education Centre, or HOpe Centre, will replace the dilapidated 1929 Activation building, where patients have complained of cramped, foul-smelling rooms, often with 15 people sharing a single toilet.

The new 150,000-square-foot, four-storey facility will be located on Lions Gate Hospital grounds near 13th Street and St. Andrews Avenue, and provide psychiatric care as well as an expansion of the UBC Medical School.

The provincial government has pledged $38 million towards the new building, but Lions Gate Hospital intends to raise the remaining $25 million through private donations.
