West Vancouver's Argyle Avenue community gardens could be transplanted once the district's landscaping plan for Millenium Park to the Music Box is completed in the spring of 2014.
Andrew Banks, West Vancouver parks manager, said there are plans to shift things around to offer more protection against storms.
"What we are planning to do is move the infrastructure, such as the community gardens, further away from the ocean and up to Argyle," said Banks. "When we consult with the
community, our permit holders, on this particular design, I think we will have a very nice product at the end that all of us will be proud of."
Banks said there are plans in the works for more community gardens and staff will be working towards that over the next few years.
But residents at last week's council meeting voiced their concerns about the fate of the current gardens.
Ruth Mabutt, a Bellevue Avenue resident, said she has had a garden plot for the past eight years and knows there is currently a waiting list.
"We have a need for continual use for the gardens as well as a need for more gardens for the people who are waiting," said Mabutt. "I question that there's enough space in this design for the community gardens because there's some large trees that you can't put gardens underneath."
Coun. Nora Gambioli was optimistic about process. "I have total confidence in the parks department especially since John Lawson Park has been such a huge success in your ability to consult and make a plan," said Gambioli.
The project also includes the demolition of the house at 1528 Argyle, which is set to come down this fall.
The parks department is seeking input from the public, especially those currently holding garden plots.
