North Vancouver RCMP are applauding the instincts of an alert citizen who saw an elderly woman in distress on a trail near Rice Lake and helped officers to locate her.

It turned out that the 85-year-old had been reported missing from Vancouver the day before.

The local citizen was out for a walk around 8:30 p.m. Monday evening when they noticed the elderly woman, who seemed to be confused, walking back and forth for several kilometres.

The person “knew something wasn’t right,” and called police, said Const. Mansoor Sahak, spokesperson for the North Vancouver RCMP.

The citizen then guided officers to the elderly woman’s location, several kilometres from the Rice Lake gate.

Sahak said it’s not known how the woman ended up at Rice Lake or where she had been the night before. She was taken to hospital to be checked, then reunited with her family.

Sahak gave kudos to the citizen who recognized that something was “off” and alerted authorities. “If it wasn’t for this person, we wouldn’t have been able to locate this (missing woman),” he said.
