People with sensitive lungs are being told to stay indoors as Metro Vancouver has issued an air quality advisory for the Lower Mainland.

Smoke from wildfires burning in the Interior has drifted, bringing elevated levels of particulate that are likely to settle on the South Coast until late Wednesday or early Thursday, according to Environment Canada.

“Within in the North Shore, they’re at the high end of normal but they’re still under the guideline levels. But since weather can change pretty rapidly and they don’t know what’s going to happen, they thought it would be good to issue this advisory,” said Dr. Mark Lysyshyn, the North Shore’s medical health officer.

Infants, pregnant women, seniors and people with lung or heart conditions are most at risk.

“It’s important they try to stay indoors if possible and not exercise strenuously outside. If they experience symptoms, they need to see their doctor,” Lysyshyn said.
