A West Vancouver teenager who decided to carry an air gun in his backpack near Park Royal Shopping Centre on Friday night ended up in hot water with local police.

West Vancouver police officers stopped the 17-year-old after receiving a report of someone possibly carrying a gun in the area.

Police who responded to the call weren't impressed, saying carrying around an imitation gun can have unintended consequences if someone thinks it's real.

While owning an air gun isn't illegal, "we don't want them brought to a school or a youth centre or a mall," said Const. Lisa Schmidtke of West Vancouver Police Department.

Imitation guns are often used in committing real crimes, police added. Police seized the air gun and kept it over the weekend.

They also let the teen's parents know of their concerns.
