The fundraiser was started for the Rodrigues-Druwe familyfollowing a four-car collision that claimed the life of the children's father on July 19.

Members of North Vancouver’s Westview Elementary School community have rallied behind a family of four who last month lost their father in a devastating car crash.

On July 19, while on an inter-province adventure near Hinton, Alberta, the Rodrigues-Druwe family was involved in a horrific four-car collision that involved a semi-trailer hauling a load. The crash took the life of Fabricio, father to 10-year-old Yuri and seven-year-old Lucas and partner to Isabela Druwe. Following the crash, Lucas was rushed to the University of Alberta Hospital in critical condition, including brain trauma.

The Rodrigues-Druwe family moved to North Vancouver in March 2019 from Brazil for Fabricio to embark on a new career opportunity, according to a recently-made GoFundMe page for the family. The campaign has so far raised over $19,000 of its $25,000 goal.

“With the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic starting shortly after their arrival, it was a difficult time to get to know their community; however, for those of us fortunate enough to know them, the Rodrigues-Druwe family is a force of positive energy: always together, always smiling, always adventuring,” the campaign reads.

As Fabricio was the primary income earner, campaign organizers say funds will be withdrawn by Druwese herself to cover Yuri and Lucas’ living and recovery expenses.

“We may not be able to show our support in person, but we can ease some of the financial pressure and allow Isabela to grieve her loss and take care of her children,” reads the fundraiser’s description. “Any contribution you can make to this heartbroken family is welcome.”
