"losing 70 pounds I am far healthier"
For Sharon, it was a matter of urgency.
"I knew that I was running out of time and excuses to lose weight. I have a family history of diabetes, high blood pressure and other health complications from obesity, so I would likely experience similar serious health consequences if I did not make changes."
Her weight problem impacted every area of her life.
"I was very sedentary, made poor food choices, had low energy and stamina for basic activity and generally was not looking after myself. My knees hurt and hips ached, so I had difficulty with stairs and walking. I was a 'clothes camouflage' expert using every trick possible to try to hide my size. For years, I avoided being in photos... As a result, I was absent for many years of pictures - and life."
Finally, she decided to act. "In January 2008, I finally reached that final 'enough is enough' moment of exasperation and attended my first Weight Watchers meeting. I joined with my husband who was there to support me, but who wanted to join for his own sake - we were going to 'do this' together." What they found surprised and encouraged them.
"Weight Watchers taught us about the Good Health Guidelines, appropriate portions, healthier cooking methods, and totally changed the way that we ate. I started taking gentle walks around the block, then gradually increased distance and speed... my confidence and energy increased. I also loved that the program felt flexible and realistic - I definitely did not feel deprived. I was so glad that I could still enjoy wine and eat my favourite foods - that made it much easier to make all the other necessary changes. The weekly meetings kept us accountable and gave me motivation, inspiration and support when I really needed it."
The Weight Watchers program is designed to be 'livable', to work within the context of your actual life. All Weight Watchers Service Providers must first achieve their goal, complete a 6 week maintenance program then maintain their weight within 2 pounds of their goal. Members come to work with Weight Watchers because they want to help others with their weight loss journey.
"After losing 70 pounds, I am far healthier, stronger and so much happier," says Sharon. "Now, I definitely make better food choices and enjoy my favourites, watch my portions, embrace and enjoy exercise, try to 'live the program' each day, but just get back to the basics when I slip. Once I reached my weight goal, I was also excited to be invited to join Weight Watchers as a leader to support and help members find their own success on the program. I feel privileged to be involved in this intimate and typically difficult stage of people's lives. I'm grateful for the inspiration they continue to give me back - each and every week."
If you've tried diets, endless exercise or supplements, maybe it's time to start a program that's been successful for five decades and lets you enjoy your life.
