Patrons at a North Vancouver pub will soon have more seating options in the open air.
On July 14, city council voted to support a curbside patio at Jack Lonsdale’s Public House, and waive a public hearing for the process.
Now the restaurant just needs final approval from B.C.’s Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch in order to operate the outdoor dining area.
After first opening on the 1400 block of Lonsdale Avenue in 1988, Jack Lonsdale’s is now one of seven liquor primary businesses in the city.
The pub has been operating two outdoor patios: one within the public sidewalk since 1997, and a curbside patio on the road area since 2020.
The curbside patio was previously approved under a temporary program during the COVID-19 pandemic that allowed food and drink establishments to expand their service areas outdoors. But that program expired last December.
Now, Jack Lonsdale’s is seeking permanent approval to include the curbside patio as part of its licensed service area, according to a city staff report.
“The proposed addition to their licence is intended to offer patrons a flexible and desirable dining experience and will include two accessible seating options,” staff said.
Pub promises to keep patio area tidy
Since its initial application, the city’s engineering department asked that the length of the curbside patio shrink from 20.7 to 10.7 metres, and the current plan reflects that change.
The new curbside patio would seat 22 people, and food and drink service must end by 10 p.m. and fully close by 11 p.m. daily, staff said.
Between 2020 and 2024, staff received five complaints related to property maintenance and sidewalk cleanliness, but none related to noise or other disturbances.
As part of the approval process, Jack Lonsdale’s has said it will keep the space uncluttered and tidy, and extend the scope of its staff cleaners to include daily cleaning of the patio area.
Coun. Holly Back said the patio application was consistent with similar operators in the city, and that she was happy to support it.
“It will be a great addition to our Lonsdale great street,” she said.
