It proved to be a golden hour in more ways than one for artist Manmeet Dhaliwal.

The Burnaby-based artist has won British Pacific Properties’ annual Paint on the Mountain competition for his piece Last Light, which depicts a rock face on Hollyburn Mountain catching the rays of a fading summer sun.

Dhaliwal took home $1,500 for his efforts, which involved painting en plein air for two days on the West Vancouver mountain. Alexander Shvetson won second place for his work Three Coniferrus, and Chris Block in third for Sunny Slope. Tom Taylor’s Boat Rhythms won the People’s Choice Award.

Sue Bayley, who’s been an ambassador for the contest since its inception eight years ago, was recognized with the Distinguished Artist Award.

After making entrance submissions, 12 artists were selected by a jury panel to create two en plein air works on Hollyburn Mountain over two days, Aug. 1 to 3.

Three jurors – which included last year’s winner Simon Andrews – selected the winners based on criteria of capturing the spirit of the outdoors, visual impact, quality, composition and creativity.

Winners were announced on the main stage of the Harmony Arts Festival Aug. 7. The People’s Choice winner was announced Aug. 13.
