As with most things, humans are formed by their surroundings, and Squamish's surroundings are uniquely phenomenal.
There are few places in the world where one can ride breathtaking oceanfront trails mere minutes from majestic alpine descents. Plus, the trail network was created entirely by volunteers over 20 years, with government assistance only happening very recently. In a location like this, it is no wonder the people who choose to live and ride here are equally spectacular.
For proof of this, one need only look at when the planet's best riders compete at the World Cup. Consistently there are contenders from Squamish and more often than not, a proud Squamolean is grinning from ear to ear on the podium.
That's another thing that makes us different. We live with Olympians. At any time on any trail, you will have regular Janes and Joes of all ages gearing up for a ride on the same trail as elite competitors. It's impossible not to be inspired by that sort of exposure.
Squamish's terrain offers a complete, extensive selection for all riding types - from cross-country epics to the twistiest, gnarliest downhill a rainforest can provide and everything in-between. In fact, it is possible to ride here for years and never ride all the trails that we have right outside our back door.
And this is just mountain biking. Cyclists are also experiencing a boom in BMX with Squamish's recent hosting of the nationals. And with the highway redesign and the advent of the GranFondo, road biking has also seen an absolute explosion in popularity.
In the end what truly turns cranks in Squamish is the fun. Every kid knows bikes are super fun and you know what? They're right.
