Indian sitar player/composer, Anoushka Shankar, the daughter of Ravi Shankar and the half-sister of Norah Jones, performs at UBC’s Chan Centre tonight at 8 p.m. Touring in support of her new album Land of Gold, Shankar will be joined by Sanjeev Shankar on shehnai, Manu Delago on percussion and hang, and Tom Farmer on acoustic bass and piano. There will be a pre-show talk with UBC’s Renisa Mawani at 7:15 p.m. in the Chan Centre’s Royal Bank Cinema.

In Bill Reid’s words, “Western art starts with the figure -- West Coast Indian art starts with the canoe.” Slide show documents a Haida delegation’s journey up the Seine River in Bill Reid’s Lootaas. Claude  Lévi-Strauss extended the invitation for the journey, and upon its completion Lootas was installed in the Musée de l’Homme, Paris. Martine J. Reid is releasing a new book, Bill Reid Collected (Douglas & McIntyre, $19.95) at the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art (639 Hornby St.) on April 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
