 Tom Taylor Pull

Over Here (Curve Music).

Rating: 8 (out of 10)

All things considered, and if you really have to pin things down, West Vancouver roots musician Tom Taylor is a soul singer.

The North Shore has been home to more than its fair share of fantastic vocal talents including Joani Taylor, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Sarah McLachlan, Craig Northey, Colin James, Adrienne Pierce, Bryan Adams, Brandi Disterheft (to name just a few off the top of my head writing to deadline) and you can add Taylor to that list.

The longtime member of She Stole My Beer brings an unassuming yet soulful approach to everything he does.

Taylor recorded his new album, Pull Over Here, at the Warehouse Studio in Vancouver with Barney Bentall and a stellar cast of supporting musicians including SSMB drummer Geoff Hicks, Shari Ulrich on fiddle and vocals with Dustin Bentall and Kendel Carson helping out as well.

Jeanne Tolmie harmonizes in step with the lead vocal (as shes done on all of Taylors records) and their work together brings to mind Emmylou Harris sitting in with Gram Parsons.

Most of the album was recorded live off the floor and features material Taylor has compiled over the past couple of years performing with BTU (Bentall, Taylor and Ulrich).

The final track ÒSandmanÓ is an old SSMB Taylor wrote years ago with Franco Diligenti. Great stuff all round.

BTU perform at St. Monicas Church in West Vancouver on Friday, Feb. 15. Contact [email protected] for info and reservations.

Broadcast Berberian Sound Studio Original Soundtrack (Warp Records).

Rating: 8 (out of 10)

Primarily an instrumental session from the sublime Broadcast veers off into oblique Current 93/Nurse with Wound territory. Minimalist briefs with an epic impact. Scoring Peter Stricklands film Berberian Sound Studio gave the U.K. duo a chance to experiment at length.
