The Good Noise Vancouver Gospel Choir digs into two historic musical traditions in their season finale at Christ Church Cathedral this weekend.
The vocal ensemble will be joined in performance by multi-instrumentalist Daniel Lapp and the Holy Cross High School’s ViBE Senior Choir.
Lapp, a roots/jazz musician known for his work on both trumpet and violin, is artistic director of the Chwyl Family School of Contemporary Music at Victoria Conservatory of Music as well as director of the BC Fiddle Orchestra.
“At Good Noise concerts, we aim to explore music’s multidimensionality,” says Gail Suderman, the choir’s artistic director. “For this upcoming finale, we were inspired by jazz and gospel music’s shared roots in improvisation . . . From swing-influenced gospel arrangements to soaring spirituals, from Latin jazz to Duke Ellington’s Sacred Music, this will be an in-depth adventure into two influential genres inextricably connected to socio-cultural histories.”
Some of the highlights in Jazz meets Gospel will include “Revelation” by the Yellowjackets, as well as “Walk With Me Lord” and “When the Saints Go Marching In” (both in new arrangements by Suderman) and the ’60s civil rights anthem “I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to Be Free,” performed by soloist Syllona Kanu in a tribute to Nina Simone.
