An award-winning documentary that features the 2019 to 2020 Hong Kong pro-democracy frontline protests will premier in Vancouver next week.

"Revolution of Our Times" will be screened at Vancouver's Cineplex Odeon International Village Cinema on Feb. 13 and 14.

"Being able to present this two-and-a-half hour long film in Canada is a ground-breaking step since this film has been banned in Hong Kong and China," said Sam Lung, one of the organizers behind this film.

The documentary, which contains footage of the 2019 Hong Kong protests and interviews with demonstrators, paints a clear picture of the anti-extradition law movement, and the emotional journey that most Hongkongers have been through over the past few years, according to Lung.

Some of the footage was even filmed from inside Hong Kong Polytechnic University by Kiwi Chow, the film’s director, noted Lung. During that time, protestors, who were predominantly university students, gathered at the school to defend the roadblock from attacks by the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF).

The name of this documentary was taken from a political slogan that was chanted throughout the protests, "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times."

Ken Tung, a commentator on Hong Kong political affairs for Richmond-based Fairchild Radio, said many Hongkongers in Vancouver are eager to see the film.

Tung also hopes the film can educate more Canadians about the political situation in Hong Kong and show the reasons for the recent influx of Hong Kong immigrants to Canada.

Since its release, the film has secured several international awards, including Best Documentary at the 58th Gold Horse Film Awards in Taiwan and the Impact Documentary Grand Prize from the 2022 FIPADOC International Documentary Festival in France.
