Vancouver Whitecaps' teen phenom Alphonso Davies opened Canada’s final presentation in Moscow today as the “United Bid” of Canada, Mexico and the United States made one last pitch to host the 2026 World Cup.

After the presentations FIFA’s member associations voted 134 to 65 in favour of the joint North American bid over that of Morocco at the FIFA Congress in Moscow.

Canadian cities named to host games in the winning bid were Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton.

Davies, 17, was born in Buduburam, a refugee camp in Ghana after his parents left their home in Liberia during the Second Liberian Civil War. His family settled in Edmonton when he was six years old. Davies joined the Whitecaps FC Residency in 2015 and became a Canadian citizen a year ago on June 6, 2017, making him eligible to play for the Canadian national team.
