WEST Vancouver Memorial Library now has mobile devices with content for children, teens and families.

A press release from the library noted two iPads, an iPod Touch, a Kobo Vox, a Kobo Touch and a Kobo WiFi are available at the youth information desk for visitors to explore and use while in the library. The iPads and iPod Touch are each loaded with more than 50 reviewed and award-winning apps. The devices also have all of West Vancouver school district's recommended mobile applications.

Shannon Ozirny, of the Youth Services department, stated the library is a good place for community members to get app recommendations and try mobile content with their children. Apps are available for all ages and range widely in content but all share one key feature: interactivity.

The iPads at the library have apps that allow young people to create music and comics, or dissect a virtual frog, among others. Youth may also experience dozens of well-known interactive books for all ages, including The Cat in the Hat and Al Gore's Our Choice. Apps such as ChemTouch and QuickGraph attempt to assist students in the middle and secondary school grades complete assignments. Interactivity makes apps especially appealing for reluctant readers, young people learning English and non-traditional learners, stated the release.

The youth department is also offering six new Kindles for kids and teens. Each Kindle e-reader is loaded with 28 titles including popular young adult fiction, children's classics and recent major award-winners. The e-readers may be checked out for three weeks.

All devices and digital content for the Technology Petting Zoo and Youth Kindle lending program were funded by the Friends of the West Vancouver Memorial Library.
