Warming heads and hearts

WARMING your neck is also heartwarming for one West Vancouver crafter.

WARMING your neck is also heartwarming for one West Vancouver crafter.

Val Hemingway is selling knitted "scufflers" - a neck warmer that looks like a cross between a scarf and a muffler, which ties up with a button - to raise money for two sponsored children at a Families for Children orphanage in India. She started selling the neck-warmers with her granddaughter as a fundraiser, but has since expanded to include a number of other area women, including many new Canadians.

Unlike a scarf, there's no long ends to tie around, but rather the scuffler wraps around the neck and ties up with a button, and all are made from 100 per cent wool that can be pushed up to cover the ears.

"I was kind of motivated by the fact it could be a real great thing to have and keep away the coolness, and they were fashionable. So I started knitting a couple and seeing how they came out and practicing with the size and buttons," she said.

Hemingway is in the process of trying to patent her design, but is encouraging other knitters to use the design to fundraise for whatever cause is close to their hearts.

Hemingway will be at the Delbrook Craft Fair Nov. 19 and 20 in North Vancouver selling her wares, along with a wide selection of other crafters. Admission is $2 and the fair runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, as well as Dec. 3 and 4.
