Uphill battle

TACKLING the Grouse Grind seven times in a single day: That's the challenge participants in an inaugural fundraiser will face in an effort to raise funds and awareness in support of B.C. families living with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.

According to a written statement, the event, dubbed the Mt. Kilimanjaro Grouse Grind for Alzheimer's, is being held on the North Vancouver mountain Sunday, Sept. 30 and is being held simultaneously with a long-running Alzheimer Society of B.C. fundraiser, Ascent for Alzheimer's.

Among the people participating in the ascent up Tanzania's Mt. Kilimanjaro this year are accomplished hikers Martin, 85, and Esther Kafer, 84. The Vancouverites, who have tackled more than 500 mountains and are credited with approximately 75 firstascents in the B.C. coastal mountain range, are interested in supporting the Alzheimer Society as well as honouring Martin's sister Etta's diagnosis with the disease. They're also hoping to be the world's oldest couple to hike the African peak.

As Martin and Esther summit Mt. Kilimanjaro, local residents are encouraged to hike the equivalent distance locally on the Grouse Grind, either as an individual or as part of a team, completing seven or more trips up the trail. Participants are encouraged to fundraise a minimum of $700 for the society in support of its programs and services.
