Toast the season with chocolate cheer

RUMOURS tell of people who believe there is such a thing as "too much" chocolate. This time of year is not kind to them.

RUMOURS tell of people who believe there is such a thing as "too much" chocolate.

This time of year is not kind to them.

For the rest of us, the holiday season is wonderfully loaded with chocolate treats: boxed and bagged, in cookies and on cakes, and now, in alcohol.

Marcus Von Albrecht - former chef and now principal of liquor importer Von Albrecht and Associates -has introduced Xfour Xoxolat Martini ($24.95 at the Village Taphouse and Edgemont Liquor Store).

Made with the help of Vancouver chocolatier Xoxolat, the cocktail mix is a blend of Xfour handcrafted vodka, single plantation cocoa, espresso, plus the sweetness of vanilla and honey. There's no mixing necessary - just pour and drink.

If your taste runs more towards ale, Granville Island Brewing has once again brewed up a few batches of Imperial Chocolate Stout for the holidays ($5.90 for 650 ml, at GIB and select liquor stores).

Created in partnership with Rogers' Chocolates, the rich stout makes a great complement to traditional holiday desserts like gingerbread and fruitcake, as well as to creamy and mild blue cheeses. Or drink it on its own, as dessert!

With its remarkable aromas of roasted malt, cocoa and coffee, the Imperial Chocolate Stout won gold at the 2010 World Beer Championships.

Get both while they last.
