Planning helps picnic success

PUTTING together a picnic basket for a crowd is not an easy task. It's always a good idea to plan ahead. If you take a little time to write out the essentials and add your favourite items, your picnic will undoubtedly be a success.

It's always a good idea to plan ahead. If you take a little time to write out the essentials and add your favourite items, your picnic will undoubtedly be a success. It's really all in the planning.

I always like to start with a nice basket. At this time of year it's easy to source some very nice styles quite inexpensively.

I prefer the varieties with reusable cutlery, plates and glasses. The reusable plastic is great as it reduces the risk of breakage.

If you are planning to be outside for a lengthy period of time you may want to pack a cooler instead. Refrigerated items will not last for long periods of time in a regular, non-insulated basket. The basket option is therefore best for shorter time periods.

Remember to add some pretty napkins, as well as salt and pepper, and don't forget the hand sanitizer and wipes. These are great in a pinch for small spills and messy hands.

An oversized blanket is an essential item as well. You may have to carry it separately but it's a must. Be sure to bring a large beach umbrella as well for shade and protection from the wind.

Pack a large ice pack inside the bottom of the basket. If you do not have a cooler pack then just place some ice in a plastic container. Follow with your food, beverages and other mealtime items. Pre-made sandwiches are always great along with meats, cheeses and crackers. Tuck in some readyto-eat fruit and sweets as well. For some reason these always taste the best on a picnic.

I also like to add some spreads, such as antipasto and hummus. These are great for pre-meal snacks before you lay out the larger lunch or dinner items. Remember to pack large plastic bags for garbage and any recyclables.
