Longtime North Vancouver resident, political cartoonist and guinea pig lover Ingrid Rice keeps a small herd of the South American rodents, which are also known as "cavies" because of their Latin name Cavia porcellus. Rice's six guinea pigs help out around the house by eating her kitchen scraps and mowing and fertilizing her lawn. Under the protective cover of wire mesh and plastic sheeting, the furry animals are free to roam the yard without the danger of being picked off by predators.
