Whether it's for a child or adult, the theme of the party is important if you want a successful event. I've always found that if you take the time to plan the theme well in advance you will have plenty of time to do a little each day and not feel too stressed by the end.
The Internet is a valuable tool these days to search for a great party theme. There are many free websites that offer wonderful advice for themes, party favors, games and other details that may be relevant for your venue.
Kids' parties are generally easier to plan, as the theme can be as simple as a pool party, dress up party or perhaps an animal theme.
The warmer summer weather allows for many outdoor themes. A nautical theme for example is a great idea for both an adult and child-friendly party.

Nautical life ring napkin holders
This is a fun and easy idea for your table. Simply purchase inexpensive wooden shower rings and remove the pin from the outside of the ring.
With a blue or pink Sharpie pen colour four stripes on each ring approximately one centimetre wide. Let dry.
Roll your napkins and place each one inside the ring. Place in a basket or bowl on your buffet table.
Nautical pillar candles
Another simple yet cute idea is to purchase a few white pillar candles in varying heights. Wrap some plain, thick brown twine around the lower half in the thickness of two-three cm.
Leave a three-cm space and then repeat.
Life Savers
I saw this at a friend's last year and thought it was very cute. Simply roll up some white or royal blue napkins and secure with a nautical-type twine or rope. Insert one end of the twine through a white Life Saver candy and secure. Place all the napkins in a large white tray. This is a nice idea for an adult nautical party and very easy to assemble.
