It's about choices, and teachers

While pondering the personalized learning found at Lions Gate Christian Academy (LGCA) I thought of how we look for the unique strengths in each of our students and try to integrate opportunities for them in the classroom.

While pondering the personalized learning found at Lions Gate Christian Academy (LGCA) I thought of how we look for the unique strengths in each of our students and try to integrate opportunities for them in the classroom. I thought about special education, adaptations and Individual Education Plans. I considered our strong learning support and work experience opportunities.

At LGCA, personalized education also means online courses that help round out our curriculum. In a small school setting, students can have more elective options through online learning. We can credit out-of-school learning opportunities such as the Royal Conservatory of Music, coaching certification and many others based on the ever-expanding list approved by the Ministry of Education. Personalized learning at LGCA also includes parent participation in the education of their children. At our school, "We know our students, we love them and we teach them." We incorporate parents in all three aspects of this quote. Knowing parents helps us know and love the students here. Teaching becomes measurably more significant when we work together . . . up close and personal. I understand that personalized education involves increased choice and focusing on the skills and abilities of our students. It is about creatively implementing resources both inside and outside school walls.

Then I stopped to ask one of our grade 12 students what thoughts came to his mind regarding personalized education at Lions Gate Christian Academy. "To me, it is the personal contact of the teachers," he said. "Their willingness to share their life stories and listen to our story results in an open environment where respect for ideas is honored. They are straightforward and honest with us."

As we move forward in education and embrace the opportunities available to students let us celebrate the value of personalized learning. It certainly makes a difference to our students.
