THE Universal Outreach Foundation was recently awarded the 14th annual Unity in Diversity Award.
According to a press release, the award is presented annually by the Baha'i community of West Vancouver to individuals or organizations that have made a significant contribution to promoting understanding and mutual respect between diverse groups.
This year's nominees ranged from a high school art student whose art reflects racial unity to the West Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club for integrating diverse cultures of the community through the sport. A panel of three judges chose the winner from this year's crop of nominees. The 2012 panel consisted of Aron Campbell, principal of Chartwell elementary and one of last year's winners as well as past nominees, Susan McFayden and Alain Blancard.
The Universal Outreach Foundation is a West Vancouver-based humanitarian organization founded by Kent and Gerry Bubbs in 2003 and works to build strong communities and improve the health of children around the world. The organization has touched the lives of thousands of children in Honduras, Central America, in Burundi, East Africa and in Liberia, West Africa.
Honourable mention was awarded to Squamish artist, Xwalacktun (Rick Harry).
The awards were announced at a ceremony Nov. 7 at West Vancouver Memorial Library..
