Glitter nail polishes shimmer this winter

Sparkle-filled nail lacquers that were hot sellers over the party season will continue to shine for winter, say beauty insiders like Adrienne Greenwood, owner-operator of Get Nailed nail bar in Edgemont Village.

"We have done nothing but glitter all season long," says Greenwood, who sees no end to the trend anytime soon.

Leading up to the holidays, Get Nailed's clients couldn't get enough of glitter-packed polishes like Rainbow Connection from OPI's Muppets collection, says the nail salon owner. Looking ahead, "I foresee the shades for winter are rich and jewel toned - dark teals, royal purples, rich reds . . . and for the spring, mellowing out into a lot of softer colours," she says.

Looking for a fun way to wear glitter? Try a fadeout.

Also known as ombré, it's a popular look that has crossed over from fashion to beauty this season. Think dip-dyed silk tunics and dresses with colours that fade from dark to light, and Hollywood's shade craze for ombré hair highlights with intentionally dark roots.

Nails get the fadeout effect with a top coat of glitter.

Choose two nail lacquers in similar shades: one a solid or sheer shimmer, the other a super glitter.

Two to try: A Lit-Teal Bit of Love, a bold aqua, and A Million Sparkles, a shimmering sea of blue packed with rainbow glitter. Both are new this month from Nicole by OPI and sell for about $11 a bottle at Shoppers Drug Mart and Wal-Mart.

Apply the solid colour as a base. Follow with glitter polish starting midway down the nail and extending to the tip. Create a soft, irregular line and apply more polish with each stroke for full-blown glitter at the tip.

Also new from Nicole by OPI this month are two shades of rich berry and burgundy: the shimmery Vio-let's Talk about Red and the glitter-packed Shoot for the Maroon. The new colours pair perfectly with winter-rich hues.

In December, OPI launched a free app that gives users a virtual look at how the latest OPI lacquers appear on their own nails. Called simply OPI, it's compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and available for download through iTunes.
