Give yourself a holiday haircut

SANTA may sport the same old hairstyle every Christmas, but for the rest of us there are a few more options.

Around the holidays, it's about classic romantic curls, casual up-dos, and reds for colour, according to Alison Alexander, who co-owns The Dye Lot with Christina Duff.

"For long hair I would definitely say romantic curls, curls with the curling iron or flat iron, depending on the kind of look you want," she said.

The main thing, she said, is not to get too stiff and formal. If you feel like putting the hair up - not a bad idea if you hope to look stylish while still roasting a turkey - then some simple braids are another option.

"We're seeing braids being incorporated into updos," she said. "That really represents what people like. They don't want it to look all stiff and formal anymore, you want it to look fun and

relaxed."

Shorter hair can stick with the romantic Christmas nostalgia by adding a few bobby pins or rhinestones, she adds, or be put up to look much longer. Alexander said she still sees a lot of fascinators in style this year, a lingering influence from the royal wedding of Will and Kate earlier this year.

For colours, she said vibrant reds, influenced by celebrities like Rihanna, are popular, as well as ombre styles, where the top is coloured a darker shade that slowly fades into a lighter colour.

One option that's a little less common in Vancouver is visiting the stylist the morning of a big Christmas party. While Vancouver residents tend to put less emphasis on styling apart from weddings, it's a lot more common in other cities on holidays like Christmas and New Year's, said Alexander, and it's something they do offer.

"I lived in Montreal for 16 years and there it was just nuts. Everyone gets all done up, really done up. Here people just get their colours done and their curls done," she said. "It's a pretty casual city, and the styles kind of reflect that."
