Get a load of Ocean Concrete

YOU'VE probably seen one at some point driving around town. They're big, colourful cement mixer trucks, some with giant asparagus painted on them, some with a smiling sun.

They're big, colourful cement mixer trucks, some with giant asparagus painted on them, some with a smiling sun.

The familiar blue-and-white trucks of Ocean Construction Supplies have been around town for some time.

The company has five plants, but the most visible is probably the one nestled into an obvious nook on Granville Island.

It's hard to miss as you walk by on your way to buy bread (or cookies!), and pass the open gate with its interesting art installation out front, and its large trucks neatly parked in a row.

The Granville Island website notes Ocean Construction is its largest and oldest tenant.

The history of this plant will be on display with onsite vintage trucks and photos when Ocean Construction hosts its 14 th annual open house on Saturday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will feature tours, interactive displays, prizes and balloons for kids.

A press release notes kids "young and old" will be allowed to climb into trucks and onto equipment to honk horns and get a taste of what it's like to be a truck driver.

Specialists from the concrete industry will be on hand to answer questions, including questions about uses of concrete and recycling waste concrete. And when you're there, don't forget to look up at the 175-foot concrete boom pole pump extended high above Granville Street bridge.
