REPRESENTATIVES of North Shore Tai Chi Spirit presented a special workshop featuring Grand Master Shou-Yu Liang recently at Highlands United Church.

Liang is a world leader in qigong, wushu and taijiquan and led two classes for more than 40 local enthusiasts Sept. 24 and Oct. 1, entitled The Art of Push Hands and Internal Energy. According to the organization, push hands is an essential part of the tai chi curriculum but it's not taught in every school as it requires a significant amount of experience and expertise. Push hands helps practitioners more strongly understand the relationship between the mind, body, thought, emotion and posture.

North Shore Tai Chi Spirit, which is owned and operated by Phoenix Hawkins, offers low-cost beginner and intermediate tai chi, Chinese health qigong and push hands classes on an ongoing basis on the North Shore. In addition to Highlands United Church, venues include John Braithwaite Community Centre and North Shore Neighbourhood House.
