SQUAMISH secondary school graduates attending Capilano University will benefit from a $100,000 donation announced Friday.

According to a written statement, the June Manson Memorial Award has been established by the family of June Manson, who passed away Dec. 6, 2010 at age 87.

The donation will support a secondary school graduate from Squamish who is currently enrolled at Capilano University.

June was born in Powell River, the second child of five children born to Fred and Eileen Feeney. June was raised in various B.C. towns where her family moved for her father's work as a civil engineer. She graduated from high school in Squamish and later graduated as a registered nurse from Vancouver General Hospital in 1946. She then worked in Montreal and Bermuda before returning to work at Vancouver General. Over the course of her life, she also worked at the Squamish General Hospital, the Outdoor School at Paradise Valley, and the Diamond Head Medical Clinic.

June met and married Bill Manson in 1950 and the two settled in Squamish where they raised their three children Michael, Graham and Jane-Anne.

Bill was a founding member of the Capilano College board and a former member of Capilano's Squamish campus advisory board. He was a charter member of the board representing Squamish when the college was first established in 1968. Later, he worked on the college's behalf for a new Squamish campus facility and at its official opening on May 30, 1995, Bill received a lifetime honorary student card. At Capilano College's 40th anniversary celebration in 2008, Bill received a President's Service Award in acknowledgement of his significant support of Capilano and its mission of enabling student success.

With the establishment of the June Manson Memorial Award, Bill and his family have renewed this commitment and have ensured that it continues for years to come.
