North Shore Schizophrenia Society board president Cheryl Zipper presents Dr. Steven Mathias, a psychiatrist at St. Paul’s Hospital, with the 2014 Responsiveness to Families Award, Dec. 16, 2014 at an event held at the society’s West Vancouver Family Support Centre. Mathias was nominated by a number of families who believe their lives would not have been the same without his treatment and care of their ill loved ones. The society presents the award annually to a health care or service provider involved in the treatment and rehabilitation of people with a mental illness who show outstanding responsiveness to families and includes them as integral members of their ill relative’s care team. The society is launching its next Family-to-Family Education course, a free 12-week peer support program serving families dealing with serious mental illness. Sessions will be held Tuesdays, Jan. 27 to April 14, 7-9:30 p.m. at the North Shore Disability Resource Centre. northshoreschizophrenia.org
