THE North Shore is often referred to as an outdoor playground, but now kids have a chance to learn outside as well.

Majesta, Tree Canada and Focus on Forests are encouraging schools across the country to enter their Trees of Knowledge competition. The grand prize is a $20,000 outdoor classroom.

To enter, schools must describe why they should receive an outdoor classroom and include a project and plan for it. Entrants will be narrowed down to a group of finalists, whom the public will vote for.

Second, third and fourth place cash prizes are also up for grabs.

Ideas for outdoor classrooms have included everything from gardens and nature trails, to shaded study areas, interactive learning spaces and musical play places, according to a media release.

The application deadline is Jan. 13, 2013. For more information go to www. majestatreesofknowledge.ca.
