Column: November wine recommendations

Wine columnist Tony Kwan recommends six wines to try this month

New offering by Joseph Phelps winery that is reduced by $10 this month.

Each month, B.C. Liquor Stores have hundreds of wines on sale. For those of you who have followed my recommendations over the last few months, you have saved money and purchased some nice wines. This month is a bonanza for those looking for value wines.

Here are my best buy recommendations for the month of November 2021:

Innisfree 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon – this is a wine from Joseph Phelps winery that uses grapes from newer vines that are not mature enough to be used in their flagship wine, Insignia, and their regular Cabernet Sauvignon wine. So this wine represents a baby or early-drinking version of the Joseph Phelps premium wines at a fraction of the price.  This wine is brand new in the liquor stores but is being reduced this month from $51.99 to 41.99.

Louis Bernard 2020 Cote Du Rhone Blanc – this winemaker is a value wine specialist so when their wines are on sale, you should take advantage of the extra savings. This wine is a blend of White Grenache, Bourboulenc, Clairette and Roussanne grapes. It will be perfect if it is well chilled and paired with fish dishes. This wine is on sale this month from $16.49 to $14.49.

Allan Scott 2020 Sauvignon Blanc – Sauvignon Blanc wines are crowd-pleasers because of the wine’s crisp acidity.  Allan Scott is a great producer of wines and 2020 was a magnificent vintage for New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs. You can pick it up this month for $21.99, reduced from the regular price of $23.99.

Tormaesca 2017 Castel Del Monte Trentangeli – this wine comes from the value region of Castel Del Monte and is a blend of 70-per-cent Aglianico, 20-per-cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 10-per-cent Syrah grapes.  This wine will be dark, rich and full-bodied.  It’s on sale this month from $23.99 to $20.99.

Pere Anselme 2018 La Fiole Cotes du Rhone – southern Rhone wines always offer great value and this wine is no exception.  This wine is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15-per-cent Syrah grapes.  It will be ready to drink right away, and it will be fruity with lots of weight and body.  It is on sale this month from $19.99 to $17.99.

Seghesio 2019 Zinfandel – Seghesio is a consistent producer of quality Zinfandel.  Zinfandel wines are high in alcohol, and full-bodied with plum and violet aromas and tastes.  It is definitely a great pairing with beef or lamb dishes.  This wine is on sale this month from $36.99 to $33.99.

Until next time, happy drinking!
