COMMUNITY members are invited to show their support for a much-needed local volunteer organization at an inaugural fundraising event set for next weekend in West Vancouver.

Rotary Ride for Rescue is a recreational cycle up Cypress Bowl Road Oct. 1 presented by members of the Rotary Club of West Vancouver Sunrise in support of North Shore Rescue. "We're always involved in projects that are going to help the community and North Shore Rescue is so well known, and some of our members know some of the members of North Shore Rescue and appreciate their volunteerism and know they have difficulty in raising funds," says Robert Crozier, event co-chairman and Sunrise club board of directors member.

North Shore Rescue is a search and rescue team run by volunteers. While the club receives funding support from a few sources, it depends on donations to enhance

training and equipment budgets.

"We are happy to be involved with them because it's such a necessary volunteer organization in the Lower Mainland," says Crozier.

Partial proceeds from the ride will support other community Rotary projects, including those that serve youth at risk, families in crisis and seniors.

They're hoping to attract 75-100 riders of all levels, 13 and over, who will participate on their own or as part of a team.

"The structure of the event is for riders of various levels to ride the 15-kilometre course uphill at their own pace," says Crozier. "We anticipate there will be serious recreational riders who will perhaps make the course in 45 minutes. Others will likely take about an hour and a half, and cycle at their own speeds. It isn't a race. There will be a chance to stop off at rest stops, at viewpoints, etc."

Participants are eligible for prizes, including for the top fundraisers. A children's race will take place at the resort as well as a host of other family-friendly activities.

"We're trying to make this a challenging cycle event for those who can participate and also a family event for kids," says Crozier.

Sign in begins at 8: 30 a.m. at Mulgrave School, and the ride will get underway at 10 a.m. Family festivities will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is $25 and riders are asked to raise at least $100 for the cause.
