On board accountant
North Vancouver native Ashley Palmer recently departed for Tamatave, Madagascar to volunteer her services in the finance department on board the world's largest charity hospital ship, the Africa Mercy.
Palmer, 30, has a bachelor of commerce from UBC, with specialization in accounting, and worked for eight years with Ernst Young in Vancouver. She will serve as senior accountant on board the Africa Mercy until June. The 449-foot ship houses six operating theatres and a 78-bed patient ward and is run by an all-volunteer crew and staff of 450.
Business showcase
The West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce will host the first Bowen Island Business Showcase on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bowen Island Community School. Best in small business
The top five finalists in 10 different award categories have been selected for the 12th Annual Small Business B.C. Awards and two North Vancouver companies made the cut. Sole Girls, an empowerment group for tween girls, has been named a finalist in the Best Community Impact category and CCN bikes is among the top five in the Best Workplace category.
All finalists will present a Dragons' Den-style pitch to a panel of judges to convince them why they should be named a B.C. best business.
Winners will be announced Feb. 26 at the Small Business B.C. Awards ceremony.
Publisher gets funding
North Vancouver MP Andrew Saxton last week announced funding of $143,288 for Canadian publisher Self-Counsel Press on behalf of Shelly
Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
The government provided this money through the Canada Book Fund to support the publisher with the ongoing production, promotion and distribution of Canadian-authored books.
Founded in 1971, Self-Counsel Press specializes in self-help law and small business books.
