Highest honour
West Vancouver entrepreneur and philanthropist Jim Pattison received the highest award given by the City of Vancouver at a ceremony on June 23.
The Freedom of the City award is granted "only in exceptional cases to individuals of the highest merit," according to the city's website. Recipients have usually gained national and international acclaim in the arts, business, or philanthropy, and have brought recognition to Vancouver through their achievements.
Pattison is chairman, CEO and president of The Jim Pattison Group, which employs more than 35,000 people in more than 400 locations worldwide.
A second Freedom of the City award was bestowed on Monday to homeless advocate Judy Graves.
Lifetime achievement
West Vancouver chartered accountant, Thomas S. Chambers, CPA, FCA, has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC (ICABC).
According to a press release, the award recognizes chartered accountants for sustained distinction in career, community service, and work within the CA profession.
Chambers was a partner with Pricewaterhouse Coopers LLP for 26 years and retired from the firm in 2002.
Immigrants recognized
Senator Mobina Jaffer of West Vancouver and North Vancouver's Nassreen Filsoof, president of the Iranian Canadian Foundation, are among the recipients of the 2014 RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant awards, which were handed out June 26 in Vancouver.
Jaffer arrived in Vancouver in 1972 after she and her family were exiled from Uganda and Filsoof left Iran in 1982, four years after the Islamic Revolution.
The awards recognize the stories and achievements of Canadian immigrants who inspire newcomers and Canadians alike.
