? Inside HBO's Game of Thrones by Bryan Cogman, Chronicle Books, 192 pages, $45.
When George R. R. Martin was approached about the possibility of bringing his epic series, A Song of Ice and Fire to television his response was: "You're mad. It's too big. It's too complicated. It's too expensive." His remarks didn't deter David Benioff and Dan Weiss who believed they could do it, and now with the first season completed and a load of Emmy and Golden Globe nominations it looks like they were right.
One of the first writers hired to work on the program was Bryan Cogman and he has been in the trenches for the entire first season. That experience made him the perfect choice to write this behind the scenes view of this powerful series.
Cogman looks at the locations in the story and the main characters, providing background material for all of them. Within each setting are a look at how the locations were created for the series, the costume and set design and the connections between the characters. There are comments from the producers, directors, writers, actors, designers, each sharing insight into the show.
Complimenting the detailed information in the book are hundreds of lavish colour photographs taken both during filming and behind the scenes.
